What is Open Office? PDF Print E-mail

OpenOffice OpenOffice.org is an office suite you can download for free. It can be used for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, databases and drawings. It is available in many languages and runs on Linux, Mac, Windows, Solaris, and other operating systems. OpenOffice.org is very comparable to Microsoft Office in terms of its capabilities across its various modules. The main difference is the price!

Who created OpenOffice?

OpenOffice.org was originally developed by StarDivision and acquired by Sun Microsystems in August 1999. The source code was released in July 2000 with the aim of reducing the dominant market share of Microsoft Office by providing a free, open and high-quality alternative. It is the result of over twenty years' software engineering. Designed from the start as a single piece of software, it has a consistency other products cannot match. A completely open development process means that anyone can report bugs, request new features, or enhance the software.

Who can use OpenOffice?

OpenOffice can be used entirely free of any licence fees by anyone. OpenOffice.org 2 is released under the LGPL licence. This means you may use it for any purpose - domestic, commercial, educational, public administration. It can be installed on as many computers as you like. You may make copies and give them away to family, friends, students and employees. Enterprises from corner-shops to corporate giants are turning to OpenOffice to power their businesses.
